Introduction

Like today, there was various disease found frequently in the past. So to cure or eradicate such conditions, the ancient 'Gurus' took the initiative and found out the remedy for it. This remedy is commonly known as Ayurveda. Ayurveda is the oldest form of treating any disease. Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, also referred to as BAMS, is a 5.5-year undergraduate course. 5.5-years include 4.5 years of study and one year of mandatory internship. This course is designed for students who want to pursue a profession in the field of Ayurveda and surgery.

 

Eligibility

BAMS requires a set criterion to be fulfilled by a students aspiring admissions in any colleges offering BAMS course. The following are the requirements accepted by most of the colleges. Although for some colleges, you should refer to the particular college's website.

  • An applicant must have completed class 12th with the combination of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as the mandatory subjects through a recognized university. 
  • Most colleges and universities ask a minimum 50% aggregate score in class 12th, although it might differ from college to college. 
  • Some institutes prefer a minimum age bar, which ranges between 17-19 years. 

 

 

Syllabus

The BAMS course is a 5.5-year course with 4.5 years of study and one year of internship. The review is further categorized into three parts, which are Section I, Section II, and Section III. Each section consists of 1.5 years. Subjects are divided into these sections and described below.

  • Vyavahar Ayurveda, Agadtantra, and Vidhi Vaidyaka (Jurisprudence and Toxicology)
  • Nidan/Vikriti Vigyana (Pathology)  / Nadi Pariksha (Pulse diagnosis)
  • Svasthavritta Yoga (Personal and social hygiene including dietetics)
  •  Charaka Samhita (A classical text of Ayurveda)

Section III

(1.5 years)

  • Shalya Tantra (General surgery and parasurgical techniques)
  • Shalakya Tantra (ENT, Eye, and Dentistry)
  • Prasuti tantra avam Stri roga (Gynaecology and Obstetrics)
