2001 Parliament Attack

Introduction

India has faced many internal and external attacks. Although we got independence from British rule in 1947, we are still fighting against crime and most deadly terrorism. Bomb blast in 1993, 2008 terror attack are a few examples of the terrorist attacks. They have also carried out attacks on the Indian Army, which were the Uri attack and Pulwama Attack. Tourism had taken these conditions to another level by planning and executing an attack on the Parliament House in Delhi where the Prime Minister and other political leaders of India carrying out a session. You might have heard of it, but to understanding it entirely, you should read this article.

Prelude

Five persons with name Hamza, Haider alias Tufail, Rana, Ranvijay and Mohammed executed this attack although few conspiracies say that there six terrorist and not five. The attack was financed and planned by two Islamic Terrorist Organisations Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Their primary motive was to hijack the Parliament House along with the politicals leaders inside it and then demand ransom from Indian Government for releasing them. The terrorist had Ak47 rifles, grenade launchers, pistols and grenades which would have been enough to take over the Parliament House.

Attack

On 13 December 2001, while the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were adjourned for 40 minutes, the terrorist entered the area of Parliament House in a car with a fraudulent identity sticker stuck on the windshield of the vehicle. They planned to begin from gate no. 5 but due to some reason they got distracted from their route, and so they decided to drive around the Parliament House and reach gate no. 5. However, there was a gate in the way which was closed, so they decided to roll back. While taking a u-turn, the driver of the vehicle crashed the car into a car standing there. It belonged to the then Indian Vice President Krishan Kant who was present in the premise. So they got out of the vehicle and started shooting on everyone standing there and reach to gate no. 5 on foot. But before arriving at their destination, an ample of bullet rounds were fired between the terrorist and the parliament Guards and Vice President's Guard. They even closed the gates of the Parliament House. All the terrorist were killed in 1 hour, and the guards secured the area of Parliament House. The attack was influenced by the November 2001 attack on the assembly of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir where around 38 people were killed. The hidden objective of this attack was to provide a safe passage to Osama bin Laden into Pakistan during the Battle of Tora Bora. Nine people died in this attack including six Delhi Police personnel, two Parliament Security Service personnel and a gardener. Around 20 people were injured severely and were taken to the nearest hospital immediately.

Conclusion

This attack was one of the most significant security lapses in the history of India as such a massive attack was planned and executed without anyone knowing about it. If their plan got success, then India would have likely to pay a lot for this incident. However, the credits of obstructing their evil motives go to the brave soldiers of India who fought bravely, and some even laid their lives. So we should be thankful to them and always praise them for the work they are doing.
