International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

August 9 signifies the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. It is observed annually round the world to guard the rights of the indigenous population. This event throws a light on  the achievements and contributions of the indigenous peoples. The commemoration takes place in recognition of the inaugural session of the working party on Indigenous Populations at the United Nations in 1982, in Geneva. It was the primary meeting where the UN body was tasked with drafting of the Declaration on the Basic Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The pandemic has led to inequalities, disproportionality affecting populations around the the globe. The day is observed to lift awareness to safeguard the social, economic, and political rights of the indigenous communities. As human activities are leading to the damaging of the ecosystem, the survival, identity, and livelihoods of those people are in danger .

History

The Commission on Human Rights adopted a resolution to think about the problems of indigenous people found out by the permanent UN Forum presented by the Economic and Social Council in April 2000. Issues like education, culture, economic and social development, the environment, health, human rights are of prime concern. The aim is mostly to strengthen the international cooperation on solving problems of the indigenous population globally.
